1929
Russian immigrant Morris Miller forms M. Miller and Son
M. Miller and Son was originally a fire rebuilding and construction company based in Newark, NJ performing carpentry jobs in the community. Morris together with his eldest son Meyer, founded the company. Jack Miller, the next eldest son of Morris and brother to Meyer, joined the business as a junior carpenter. In later years when Jack and his son, Jerry Miller became public adjusters, they retained the family business name.
1929-1933
The Great Depression hit
The Wall Street Crash of 1929, also known as the beginning of the Great Depression, was kicked off by a major stock market crash. It was a decade of depression where the economy was sinking and business opportunities for M. Miller and Son were difficult to come by.
1940-1959
Son grows to Sons but stays Son
Eddie Miller, younger brother of Jack joins his brother and father, Morris in the family business. The carpentry and remodeling business grew throughout Essex County. During this period, M. Miller and Son built a sterling reputation within the community as fair and honest workers.

1960
A Public Adjusting Firm is Born
Gerald “Jerry” Miller, son of Jack Miller, joins the family business. After graduating from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Jerry sold life insurance for Prudential. One day, Jack got a call from an old client who had a small fire. The client wanted Jack to help him make repairs. When Jack arrived the following day to start the job, he was told that his services were no longer needed as they had hired an area public adjuster. From that point on, Jerry took it upon himself to learn all he could about how public adjusters assist their clients. He became a Newark auxiliary fireman and rode with the engines to fire scenes throughout the city. Jerry observed how public adjusters operated and he talked to people who had recently lost everything from floods to fires.
Soon Jerry and Jack became partners and relaunched M. Miller and Son as a public adjusting firm. The firm’s background in construction work proved to be immensely beneficial in assessing property damage.
1961
655 Clinton Avenue, Newark, NJ
Once M. Miller and Son rebranded as a public adjusting company, the office relocated to Clinton Avenue in Newark. During this time the office staff expanded, and M. Miller and Son experienced an era of tremendous growth.
1967
The Newark New Jersey Riots Unfold
The 1967 Newark riots was one of 159 race riots that swept cities in the United States during the "Long Hot Summer of 1967". This riot occurred between July 12 and July 17, 1967. Over the four days of rioting, looting, and property destruction, 26 people died, and hundreds were injured. Much of the central ward of the city was destroyed by fire. M. Miller and Son helped homeowners and commercial business owners rebuild their lives from the ground up.
1969
M. Miller and Son Joins NAPIA
The National Association of Public Adjusters (NAPIA) was established in 1951 to promote a higher standard for policyholder advocacy. NAPIA members are public insurance adjusters, who act in accordance with a strict code of ethics. Jerry was inducted into NAPIA in 1969 and since then, each and every M. Miller and Son adjuster is also a member of this prestigious organization.

Marilyn (Miller) Freeman Joins the Family Business
The company began to grow exponentially, and Jack’s daughter and Jerry’s sister Marilyn joined the firm as an office manager and bookkeeper. Marilyn’s role was instrumental in the growth of the company as she provided customer support, managed administrative personnel and helped to keep the business running smoothly.

The Move to Hillside, NJ
After an interim move to 1250 Liberty Avenue in Hillside, the office moved to the location where it remains today, 1211 Liberty Avenue. This new space offered expansion opportunities. M. Miller and Son grew to 18 employees and broadened their reach by servicing claims not only in Essex County but throughout the tri-state area.

Irvington, NJ Community Building Settlement
M. Miller and Son sustains a big win for the residents of Irvington when the Irvington Town Council voted to accept the negotiated settlement for damages sustained in a fire at the Community Building.
1976
Perth Amboy, NJ Industrial Property Fire
Twenty-four persons were injured, four of them critically, as a result of an explosion in a chemical and asphalt plant in Perth Amboy. M. Miller and Son was instrumental in helping the owners of the plant help rebuild the lives of their injured employees as well as, restore their business.

Gary Freeman Joins M. Miller and Son
Gary Freeman, Marilyn’s son and Jack Miller’s grandson, joined the firm after graduating high school. Growing up in the family business Gary was a natural fit to join the M. Miller and Son team. Gary currently serves as a data associate and provides construction, inventory, and data-processing expertise.

Jerry Miller Meets Ol’ Blue Eyes
Jerry introduced Frank Sinatra at The Jewish Federation of Central NJ event held at Resorts International Hotel. Federation is a Jewish philanthropy that cares for people in need locally, in Israel and in 70 countries around the world.

Michael Borgo Joins the Firm
Michael Borgo joined M. Miller and Son in 1980 as an inventory specialist and became a principal in 1990. As a licensed public adjuster and loss consultant, Michael has successfully adjusted thousands of building, personal property, business interruption, and other types of claims that have arisen from catastrophic events.
1983
Michael Miller Joins the Firm
Michael, son of Jerry Miller, began working for M. Miller and Son as a salesman and adjuster. Michael personally took part in adjusting countless catastrophe claims during Hurricane Andrew in Florida, Hurricanes Luis and Marilyn in the Caribbean, and Hurricane Georges and Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. Michael is currently the managing member of M. Miller and Son, in addition to being a general property adjuster and loss consultant for the firm.
1986
One of the Original SPPA’s (Senior Professional Public Adjusters)
Jerry Miller, while attending the annual NAPIA convention was asked to sit for the newly established SPPA exam. The SPPA designation distinguishes its members as a highly skilled professional, possessing the competence and relevant knowledge necessary to succeed as a public adjuster. Jerry was part of the original group of NAPIA members to receive their SPPA designation.

Four Generations Strong...
Robert Miller, son of Jerry Miller and brother of Michael, began working for M. Miller and Son as an estimator and coordinator of emergency services. Robert's background, first as a contractor's assistant rising to a construction supervisor, then working for a general contractor who renovated apartment complexes and finally launching his own general contracting company that restored fire and water damaged property, helped mold Robert - becoming a highly effective building damage consultant and property loss adjuster.

Bruce Alan Sidwell Joins M. Miller and Son
Bruce has served as M. Miller and Son Data Manager since 1988. His area of expertise is computer operations. Prior to graduating from Kean College, Bruce was a member of the United States Navy.

Barry Miller Joins M. Miller and Son
Barry son of Jerry Miller and brother of Michael and Robert, has practiced insurance litigation, real estate law and general commercial litigation for over 29 years as in-house counsel to M. Miller and Son, LLC, while also maintaining his own private client base operating as The Law Firm of Barry S. Miller, Esq. Barry has fought on behalf of our clients in some of the most complex insurance litigation cases. In instances where insurance companies have not cooperated, and in some cases, denied insurance coverage, Barry has represented and fought on behalf of Miller’s clients.

Michael Miller and Michael Borgo, Appointed Principals
The torch is passed as Michael Miller and Michael Borgo take on a leadership role as principals within the company. Both were instrumental in growing the firm’s business and continue to serve clients today.

Ofelia Acevedo Joins M. Miller and Son
Ofelia joined M. Miller and Son in 1991. She oversees operations and office services for the firm. A licensed public adjuster in New Jersey since 1994, Ofelia additionally plays a key role at M. Miller & Son in the adjustment process of claims. She also serves as a liaison with attorneys, mortgage specialists, and insurance company personnel. Ofelia is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese.

Hurricane Andrew Strikes Southern Florida
M. Miller and Son joins forces with affiliated NAPIA (National Association of Public Insurance Adjusters) adjusters in Florida to help those affected by this catastrophic, Category 5 storm. It is M. Miller and Son’s first foray into dealing with weather related losses outside of the tri-state area.

John Mostich Joins M. Miller and Son
John joined M. Miller and Son in 1992. As an Information Technician, he is responsible for acquiring and retaining essential data, including maintaining records in the firm’s computer database and monitoring daily field activity. John graduated from Chubb Institute in 1994 with a degree in Computer Science.
1993
Natasha Sangiacomo Joins M. Miller and Son
Natasha joined M. Miller and Son in 1993. She serves as executive assistant to Robert B. Miller and handles all executive-level administrative functions for the firm. Natasha has been a licensed public adjuster in New Jersey since 1994. In addition to being responsible for establishing and maintaining claim files, she plays a critical role in the adjustment process of claims. Natasha is fluent in Portuguese.

Jerry Miller Retires
After 35 years building and defining the public adjusting business, Jerry retires. During this year, two more named storms, Hurricanes Luis and Marilyn hit the Caribbean. Once again, M. Miller and Son teams with other NAPIA affiliated firms in the region adjusting commercial, hospitality and multi-family structures in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

The Firm Expands into Puerto Rico
Spearheaded by Robert Miller, M. Miller and Son opens an office in Puerto Rico and is involved in assisting commercial and habitational property owners with their claims after Hurricane Georges, a Category 3 storm.

Jeff Schwartz Joins M. Miller and Son
Jeff joined M. Miller and Son in 1999. His many years of experience as a public adjuster for residential, commercial, and industrial property losses have enabled him to successfully negotiate positive outcomes for the firm’s clients, with claims ranging from the conventional to the highly intricate. Jeff is a member of NAPIA and NJAPIA. He is an active participant in NAPIA's continuing education program, in addition to being a regular participant at industry conventions. Jeff graduated with honors from Adelphi University with a B.A. in Communications.

Fighting Fires with Cutting Edge Technology
M. Miller and Son is recognized for their donation to the Hillside, NJ fire department. Assisting them in obtaining a thermal imaging camera. A thermal imaging camera is a type of camera used by firefighters that renders infrared radiation as visible light. Such cameras allow firefighters to see areas of heat through smoke, darkness, or heat-permeable barriers.
In 2000, the Los Angeles Times called the thermal imaging camera, “perhaps the best advance in fire equipment in the last 25 years – and the most expensive.”

Newark Mayor Sharpe James Issues Proclamation Honoring M. Miller and Son
The mayor opened the ceremony by recounting a fire loss he personally suffered while a councilman, and he praised the efforts of Jerry Miller and M. Miller and Son team for their outstanding disaster recovery assistance.

Michael Miller Named to Serve on the Board of NAPIA
Michael served for two, three-year terms on the National Association of Public Insurance Adjusters board. Michael assisted the association with setting policy and providing oversight for all NAPIA programs and activities.

Maria N. Contreras Joins M. Miller and Son
Maria has been a member of M. Miller and Son since 2002, providing office administration support. In addition to fielding all incoming calls and handling correspondence, she is responsible for maintaining claims-documentation files, inventory of supplies, and scheduling appointments for the firm’s executives and staff. Maria also serves as a customer service specialist for M. Miller and Son, liaising with existing and prospective clients. She provides status updates on open claims, in addition to answering questions. Maria is fluent in Spanish.

Hurricane Irene Lashes New York; Expansion to NYC
The storm, which was downgraded from a hurricane shortly before it hit New York, attacked in a flurry of punches. A police station in Cranford, N.J., flooded and had to be evacuated. Firefighters paddling in boats rescued more than 60 people from five-foot floodwaters on Staten Island. New York’s major airports were closed, and at least five storm-related deaths were reported in New York State and New Jersey. M. Miller and Son opened an office in Manhattan to support its clientele based in the five boroughs and New York State.

Elisabete “Lis” Moreno Joins M. Miller and Son
Lis joined M. Miller and Son in 2011. She brings to the firm more than 10 years’ experience providing customer service and office administration. Currently, Lis is executive assistant to the firm’s principal, Michael A. Miller. In addition, she assists M. Miller & Son’s adjusters in handling open claims. Lis also oversees the firm’s website, social network profiles, and online listings. Prior to joining M. Miller & Son, Lis worked on a number of construction projects throughout the tri-state area assisting the head engineer of a prominent New York City construction company. She is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish.

100 Year Storms Hitting Nearly Every Year
More than 50 million people from the mid-Atlantic to New England braced for a massive storm, as Hurricane Sandy churned northward on a collision course with another storm system that swept in from the west. The devastating storm killed more than 100 people, destroyed whole communities in coastal New York and New Jersey, left tens of thousands homeless, crippled mass transit, triggered paralyzing gas shortages, inflicted billions of dollars in infrastructure damage and cut power to more than 8 million homes. M. Miller and Son is there to help our tri-state clients piece their world’s back together.

Wilfredo “Willie” Blanco Joins M. Miller and Son
Willie joined M. Miller and Son as a Senior Claims Adjuster in 2016. He is currently working on his thirteenth hurricane in Puerto Rico. Previously, Willie followed his construction family roots and worked as a contractor. When Hurricane Andrew devastated South Florida in August of 1992, he was hired by East Coast Public Adjusters and learned the best practices to post-catastrophic reconstruction and recovery. Following Hurricane Sandy in 2012, he assisted colleagues in reviewing and performing forensic adjustment of underpaid claims to secure additional recovery. Willie is licensed and bonded in Florida, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Puerto Rico.

Hurricane Maria Strikes and Puerto Rico Goes Dark
Less than two weeks after Hurricane Irma dealt a glancing blow to the island of Puerto Rico, Hurricane Maria which made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane, took out the island’s entire power grid, and only added to the island’s woes. M. Miller and Son re-established their office in Puerto Rico and moved several employees to the region to help residents and to help deal with the storm’s aftermath.

Agnes Collazo Sanes Joins M. Miller and Son
Agnes is an Executive Assistant for M. Miller and Son in San Juan, Puerto Rico, joining the team in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Previously, Agnes worked as an editorial director, project manager and publishing director for a Miami publishing company based in Puerto Rico. She studied marketing and business administration at the University of Sacred Heart and has a masters degree in Communications from the University of Puerto Rico.
